There is nothing you can do to avoid swelling but there are ways to minimise its discomfort.
- When sitting elevate feet as often as possible if you work at a desk, use two phone books or a stool, or pull out the bottom drawer of your file cabinet and prop upyourfeet.
- At home, prop up legs as often as possible on a table. Or sit sideways on couch with your back against the arm and legs resting on sofa cushions.
- Lying down on your back, place one pillow under thigh and a second one under calves and heels.
- While standing, do foot circles with pointed toes, alternating the feet.
- Walking and mild exercise will also circulate extra fluids.
- Wear low-heeled comfortable shoes.
- Wear support pantyhose to give legs additional support.
- If your hands swell a lot, try to sleep with one pillow under each shoulder and wrist.
- Cut down on your salt intake. Don't eat salty snacks such as chips.
- Since some swelling is normal, do not use any type of medication like diuretics. If swelling becomes abnormal check with yourdoctor.
